Hanging Threads from Every Seam

By Tim Buktu from Greenwood Lake, NY on 8/21/2011

4out of 5

Chest Size: Feels true to size

Sleeve Length: Feels true to length

Pros: Breathable, Stylish, Durable, Lightweight, Dries Easily, Comfortable

Cons: Frays

Best Uses: Camping, Hiking, Travel, Casual Wear

Describe Yourself: Casual/ Recreational

I have one sahara shirt that's served me well through southwest and rocky mts; so I ordered four different shirts to supplement my wardrobe. All pairs arrived quickly with free shipping. However long threads were hanging off every seam. Literally every seam! I was able to pull some out easily, but most are sewn into the seams. I'm not going to scour new $50 shirts with a pair of scissors. I plan to keep the two least affected ones and return others to local store, so I don't get hit with return shipping.

Meteor Crater - Interstate 40 - Arizona

50,000 years ago a 150 foot meteorite slammed into what is now northern Arizona.

The result? Meteor Crater!

Originally 700 feet deep (now 550), 2.4 miles in circumference, and 3/4 mile across.

It's a bit of a tourist trap. But Meteor Crater retain some Route 66 charms.

It's a good rest stop between Winslow and Flagstaff. And there's a Subway.

Getty Villa - Pacific Palisades - California

The Getty Villa houses the antiquities collection started by billionaire oilman J. Paul Getty

The villa is often confused with it's younger sibling, Getty Center. Both museums are architectural works of art.

Getty Center is modern
Getty Villa is ancient.

Getty modeled his villa on ancient Roman seaside-estates in the Bay of Naples.

Visiting Getty Villa is--quite literally--descending into an archaeological excavation. Moreover, it is a trip back in time. Imagine yourself a Roman stepping into the atrium of an rich friend's beach house.

Slideshow

I've been to Pompeii. I think Getty Villa is just as good...if not better...if not great. It's my favorite museum in California and probably the United States

Controversy surrounds certain acquisitions, some are even being returned to Italy. The collection is somewhat lopsided. Many artifacts come from Eastern Roman Provinces (present day Turkey). That's what was on the art market when Getty was collecting.

It's focus is decidedly Roman. Still, Greece and Etruria are well represented.

Egypt is not (an alcove has some Roman-Egyptian stuff). For Egyptian artifacts, mecca is the Rosicrucian Museum in San Jose, CA. Like the Getty Villa it's comprehensive. It's galleries are curated thematically. There is an almost exclusive focus on Egypt with some Mesopotamian artifacts as well.
